I tested AEO on our own content: here’s what it really changes for SEO

Content optimized to please Google no longer guarantees anything when an AI answers in a single sentence. Here's what AEO actually changes, and where to focus first.

A Google search used to return ten blue links. The same query asked to ChatGPT returns one answer. Just one. This shift in format isn’t a technical detail, it’s a complete change in the rules for anything related to online visibility.

AEO, or answer engine optimization, refers to the set of practices aimed at getting a brand, product, or piece of expertise to appear in the answers generated by conversational AIs – ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity. This is no longer about ranking position in a list of results, it’s about presence within a synthesis.

What AEO actually changes compared to SEO

Classic SEO relies on a simple principle: one page, one ranking, one click. AEO works differently. The AI reads several sources, extracts a synthesis, and cites – or doesn’t cite – a brand along the way. There’s no position 1, 2, or 3. There’s “cited” or “absent”.

In practice, a piece of content can rank on the first page of Google and still be completely invisible in an LLM’s answers. These are two distinct logics, with distinct criteria.

If your brand never comes up when you test a product query on ChatGPT, that’s not a bug. It means the model simply didn’t find a source clear, cited, or structured enough to mention you.

AEO, GEO, SEO: three overlapping logics

The term generative engine optimization (GEO) is often used as a synonym for AEO. In practice, AEO focuses on the answer format – question/answer, FAQ, clear definitions – while GEO covers optimization more broadly for any generative engine, including Google’s AI overviews. SEO remains the foundation: without domain authority, without proper structure, neither of the other two layers holds up.

Approach What matters Desired outcome
SEO Ranking position in results A click
AEO Presence in the generated answer A citation
GEO Visibility across all generative engines A place in the AI ecosystem

These logics don’t exclude one another. They stack. Content that’s well structured, well sourced, and well linked serves all three at once.

The levers that actually move the needle

There’s no silver bullet, but a few workstreams come up consistently in analyses of AI search behavior:

  • Structuring content as direct question-and-answer pairs, with the answer given in one or two sentences before any elaboration
  • Using FAQ and HowTo schema.org markup to make automatic extraction easier
  • Building brand authority on third-party sources already cited by the models, rather than relying solely on your own site
  • Keeping strict consistency between the information on your own site and what appears elsewhere on the web

On this last point, AIs cross-reference sources. A product page that contradicts a customer review or a third-party page muddies the signal, and the model often favors the most consistent version across sources, not the most recent one.

Where does your brand stand today

Most marketing teams discover their real situation the moment they manually test a dozen queries on ChatGPT or Perplexity. The result rarely surprises in a good way. They find competitors better positioned than expected, outdated information repeated by the model, or total absence on queries that are actually central to the business.

AEO isn’t just another marketing layer to add to the list. It’s a change in the nature of search itself, and it reshuffles positions already earned in SEO. The brands getting ahead now are the ones starting to measure their presence in AI answers before their competitors do.
